Etichal Statement

Merits intends to implement projects aimed at raising public awareness of the inherent interdependence between all humans and between humans and the biosphere.

Awareness of such interdependence is only significant if it translates into:

  • Willingness to act more responsibly and take care of yourself, others and nature
  • The will to build relationships by focusing on the value, cultural and anthropological elements common among all human beings and to consider differences as a wealth to be valued in the context of a fundamental human brotherhood

Merits is a tool designed to:

  • Increase confidence in existence and trust in other human beings
  • Reward behaviours that unite people, enhance cultural diversity, are oriented to the care of others in relationships of reciprocity and equal dignity of those who help and are helped
  • Create synergies between public institutions, business communities and organized civil society to create a sustainable economy and a fair society, to enhance and protect the commons and to generate shared value.

In the Merits model the rewarding of behaviours cannot and must not be aimed at obliging citizens to engage in any behaviour, or to punish those who decide not to engage in such behaviour.

  • Merits operates rewarding those who freely decide to engage in precise behaviours and not punishing and/or socially belittle those who do not.

  • One of Merits' key goals is to nurture behaviours with a positive impact on individuals and community by amplifying the impact of those who engage in these behaviours and helping them to inspire others. The levers on which Merits acts are inspiration and enthusiasm, not guilt or fear.

  • Socially positive behaviours or virtuous behaviours are defined as such according to the following values and parameters:

    • These actions have a positive impact on both those who carry them out and on the whole community

    • They have a social and environmental impact that improves the sustainability, social and relational capital of the community

    • They are inspired by and nourish the following values:
      • The innate dignity of human life
      • Respect and consideration for others
      • Respect for the environment
      • The importance of personal integrity and selfless service to others
      • A non-violent attitude
      • The personal and collective search for peace and happiness
      • The right to health and full expression of one's potential
      • Global view, local action
    • Respect fundamental human rights
    • Are in line with SDGs

Merits is not and does not want to be:
  • A social control tool
  • A platform that facilitates the creation or consolidation of economic monopolies and authoritarian political powers

This framework of values is strongly supported, in Italy, by the founding document that inspires and regulates civil coexistence: the Constitutional Charter. The construction of participatory welfare and the consolidation of models of civil economy based on reciprocity are in fact rooted in the articles of the Constitution that recall the importance of basing social relations on the forms of a community based on solidarity.

The Constitution states that the Republic "requires the fulfilment of the unbreakable duties of political, economic and social solidarity" (Art. 2) and has the task of "removing economic and social obstacles, which, by effectively limiting freedom and equality of citizens, prevent the full development of the human person" (Art. 3).

The centrality of the common good and the general interest of society is a constant for Italian citizens who wish to follow constitutional principles. And in fact, as Art says. 4, "every citizen has a duty to perform, according to his or her own possibilities and his own choice, an activity or function that contributes to the material or spiritual progress of society." Similarly, companies are obliged to operate responsibly and the State and Regions must take appropriate action "so that public and private economic activity can be directed and coordinated for social purposes" (Art. 41) and to ensure that private property plays also a "social function" (Art. 42)

Particularly important, for the creation of circuits of solidarity economy, participated and generative welfare is what is stated in the last paragraph of Art. 118: "State, Regions, Metropolitan Cities, Provinces and Municipalities favour the autonomous initiative of citizens, individuals and associates, to carry out activities of general interest, on the basis of the principle of subsidiarity."

The merits project aims to enhance - on the basis of the principle of horizontal subsidiarity which also governs the participation of citizens and organisations in the social life of the European Union - the ability of local communities to build networks of positive relationships for the benefit and general interest of local communities and society as a whole.
